Dear Senator Barrios, Senator Glodis, and Mayor Gay,
If you want to get unenrolled voters to vote for Democrats and draw them into the Democratic Party, you need to appeal to people like me. I was unenrolled for my entire voting life until the Reich candidacy got me to enroll as a Democrat so I could run for delegate. I considered myself "independent" and thought that all parties were only for insider politicking. I think my views are representative of much of the 40% of the Massachusetts electorate who are unenrolled, and the 27% who voted for Reich in the primary.
Independents like me don't care about party loyalty or about which candidates are "lifelong Democrats." We care about whether there's a good candidate and about whether issues important to us are being addressed. Reich was immensely popular among independents because he was unafraid to call himself a liberal and was unafraid to espouse progressive values that so many independents believe in. We don't see the party's regular candidates doing that, and we have lost faith in the Democratic Party as a direct result. Give us candidates with strong progressive principles and we will come rushing back.
Sincerely,
Jesse Gordon
